I remember finding out
that fairytales were whittled down
monsters live in a college dorms,
suits and sweats and best friends mouths
I remember skipping rocks
listening to top 40 pop
a quiz inside a magazine
told me I should loosen up
skin and bones,
ash to ash to dust
crayon outlines of my friends
DIY and dying plants
but if lonely trees don’t make a
sound, what if I’m never seen
again…
winter brings a chrysalis
but transformations not so quick
shedding for a change and
ending up the way I’ve always been
skin and bones,
ash to ash to dust
everything and at once,
… not much
fish, following the river
birds, leaving for the winter
maybe one day when I’m old
I’ll tell the things that I’ve been
told to teenagers who write me off
and think they know the things I know
or maybe I’ll still be the same
or maybe I’ll have learned to change
read the brothers Grimm to my children’s kids
and
start it all again
